I did my half-mile fin swim today in 17:44, a mere 16 seconds below the required time of 18:00. Whew! But 16 seconds is as good as 5 minutes, cuz I pass! Next is the 1/4 mile unassisted swim in under 10:00.
I made another quilt top yesterday for a friend’s little girl. From cut one to the last seam was only 3 hours and it’s as cute as can be! Not very expensive either, and it’s just perfect for a child (36 X 49) or an adult that gets cold in the car traveling. I have plans for more of these!
I can never think of a good title for just a plain ‘ol post! I’ve been swimming at LSU and realized yesterday that I wasn’t quite ready to swim on back to back days! My arms/shoulders were really sore, but I squeezed out about 1/4 mile of swimming and a couple of stabs at my underwater swim. Holding your breath while swimming underwater for 75 feet is longer than you might think!
I had a great time last weekend at a quilting retreat in town. I managed to finish a baby quilt top for a friend and two other tops from start to finish. I was tired by the end and the last one to leave but I got so much done! They are now at the longarm quilter and I should be working on bindings by week after next.
The Florida Keys dive trip is fast approaching, only three and a half weeks away. I’m trying to get a base tan layer at the tanning booth so I don’t fry in the sun on the trip. I’m ready to go! We should have a great time. We will be diving a good bit, spending the 4th of July in Key West, spending a day riding the rides at Universal, and a dive in the Disney Epcot Aquarium! Woohoo!
Today I was issued a brand new 2012 Dodge Charger police unit and it is PHATALICIOUS! This is the finest unit I have had in my 26 years on the department. It’s got the whole no key thing going on, awesome interior, digital displays, touch screen radio and AC controls, front input jack for my satellite radio, a USB charger built in, and controls on the back of the steering wheel for the stereo. Awesome bar lights, too. Just loving it!
I got my new dive camera today as well as a new mask and fins. I had never replaced the fins I left in Fiji in 2009. A bunch of us donated our dive gear to the divemasters there and I never got new ones, just been using my old Dacor fins. The mask is the newest Scuba Pro mask with a completely new style of skirt and it’s really comfortable. Unfortunately it didn’t come in green but I’m thinking about popping off the plastic plate and having it painted green! What divers won’t do to be color-coordinated! I had to get a new camera since old one flooded a couple of years ago. The good thing is it’s the newest biggest baddest Sea Life yet. The bad thing is I’m now out of tax return money! Oh well, I’m working extra duty as I type so I’ll just have to make more!
I joined the LSU Recreational Center today and finally have a place to swim regularly again, which means I can start preparing for my timed swims and water skills tests for dive instructor! It’s a good price for alumni, it’s about 2 miles from my precinct, and a great facility! Besides swimming they have every machine imaginable and even a rock-climbing area. I can go straight after work before going home or to extra duty and I was able to get a locker for the year so I don’t even have to tote all my stuff back and forth every day. Woohoo!
This should help with the “getting in shape” efforts as well. When I was doing all the water work for my divemaster certification I lost about 25 pounds so I’m excited about eating regular food again. That Medifast is effective but nothing like eating decent food and exercising regularly. By the way, if you want to treat yourself to Taco Bell, stay away from the combo burrito. It’s 1/2 pound and 470 calories! Made that mistake today. If I’d just stuck to my regular order of a beef meximelt and a taco supreme I’d have gotten outta there with about 470 kcal for both, but with all three it was almost 1,000 calories! Holy cow, I try to stay around 1200-1400 for the whole day! Ouch…
I took today off and helped with class at Seven Seas Dive Store. Although I’ve been a NAUI Divemaster since 1997, I haven’t been diving much in the last couple of years. I was out all year in 2011 due to my shoulder surgery. I had a blast in the pool today. The students were great and had a good time. And of course my Seven Seas family took me back into the fold like I hadn’t missed a day! My friends the Cohagens and Dawseys are the best and I have really missed spending time with them. It’s great to be back! And I’m “jumping in with both feet” with several excursions already planned. Next week it’s off to Panama City to get certified to teach Dan O2 classes on Friday, my first instructor certification. Then Saturday and Sunday we’ll be certifying students diving at the jetties. Then in July we will be in the Keys and Universal Studios for ten days. Right after that, it’s back to Panama City for some scallop hunting. Then, in April of 2013 we are going back to Bonaire with a possible trip to Cozumel in October! I’m also going to finally go for my SCUBA instructor certification. It’s going to be a great year for diving!
So the first night on the mattress was uneventful. It was comfortable but I still woke up with an aching back. I’ve been told by several people that it takes a few days to a couple of weeks to get used to it. I guess if you’re not used to sleeping in alignment then there are some adjustments. I got a little warm, which I heard was an issue. But I often get hot during the night and I don’t know that last night was any different than usual. The jury is still out but I’m hoping that I will come to love it as much as many of my friends say that they love theirs!
I went to Daisy’s quilt store today with the intention of sewing on a baby quilt for a friend. But, when we got there, Daisy had begun rearranging some stuff and before we knew it, the whole back of the store was in total disarray! We spent the day helping her move fabric, organizing her “stash” and just some general tidying up. I had to leave to get to work on time so I didn’t get to see the final product. But since my fabric came in for another quilt in line, I may have to go back tomorrow!
I finally bought the Golden Kite pattern “High Anxiety”. It is a HUGE underwater scene, complete with a killer whale and sunken ship. You can see a picture of it here. I have been looking at this pattern for many years and I finally just got it. There are 199 different colors! About 120 of those are solid DMC colors. The rest are 1 thread from each of two different colors. It’s going to be a big undertaking but I’m excited! I got thread cards, all my threads, and a double-sided box to keep them in. That’s what I’m doing while working extra duty from 1700-midnight, wrapping thread and labeling.
The Medifast plan isn’t working out so well. I gave it a good try, but it is HIGHLY restrictive, like 850 calories daily and no exercise allowed. So I’ve decided to use the Medifast meals I’ve already bought as snacks and eat some regular meals along with them. They taste pretty good for the most part and eating five of them a day gives me 100% of all the main vitamins and calcium. I’m walking most every day and want to start adding some weight training as well. I thought long and hard about why I actually want to lose weight. I don’t want to be a model, I just want things to be a little easier to do, like playing softball, diving, etc. It’s made it easier to behave without being ridiculous.
I can finally get back into diving again! I couldn’t dive all year in 2011 due to my shoulder surgery. I’m helping with a class this weekend, going to the Keys in July, and going to Bonaire next Easter! I’m very excited as I really love diving and I have missed it and my diving buddies! I’ve got a lot to do between now and the July trip. My gear needs servicing, I need to re-certify in first aid and CPR, and I have to replace my underwater camera that got flooded last time I went diving.
Wow, two posts in a week!
So I said I was going to try to blog regularly again and here it is five months later! I have taken pics of all of the Christmas 2011 quilts, now to find the time to post them somewhere and link it to here! I’ve made three more since then with another three cut out and ready to sew. I’ve been to a couple of stitching retreats in town, one with Pat Wys in Panama City, and a small quilt show in Pensacola. I’ve burned out a little on quilting right now and I plan to start stitching again.
Our LNS closed in December and it was a sad affair. We still do Tuesday night stitching, every other Tuesday at the library. It just isn’t the same and some of our crew have yet to appear. I have so many projects that I have started that I want to finish cuz I have so many more that I want to start! I’m sooooo ready to retire and spend my whole day doing exactly as I please! Only 6 years and three weeks max, and if things continue as they are now at work that may be down to five years in short order! I’m trying to hang in there for the most benefit possible but it’s harder and harder every passing day.
I’ve been on a country music kick since last summer’s trip to the beach with my sister, BIL, and nephew. I listened to country music for years but got away from it for awhile. I really like the 70’s music but I get tired of the same thing all the time with nothing new.
I started on the Medifast “Take Shape for Life” plan on Wednesday, April 11th. I’m down five pounds so far. Yesterday I just freaked out after several really good days and ate two boxes of Girl Scout cookies. Yes, I said two BOXES! Oh well, I’m back on plan today and feeling good about it. I’m going diving in July in Florida and trying my best to be down 20 pounds by then. It’s my first dive trip in over two years and I’m really looking forward to it!
I finally bit the bullet and bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress set today! I have been wanting one for over 12 years and I can’t wait to get it. It should be delivered on Tuesday. The plan says that good restful sleep is a very important part of living healthy and I just haven’t slept really well in years. I’m hoping the new mattress will help!
In closing I would say that I will try to be more consistent in my blogging but I’m afraid that idea lives with others in the dreams of my mind…
I have been quilting like a madwoman for the past 7 months! I can’t wait to be able to post pics of all the different things I have made. But it will have to wait until after Christmas! I’m wearing down but I know it will all be worth it when I finally get to give them away.
I went to the Quilt Festival in Houston with my friend Kate November 2-4. It was the first time for both of us and we had that “deer in the headlight” look for three days! It was fantastic and expensive! I have no impulse control so I’ve been working lots of details and overtime trying to pay off what I spent. But I got a lot of neat new tools and techniques to try out, books, and a couple of quilt kits. It will finally be time to make something for myself in January!
I have been away for quite a while! Of course, I don’t think anyone has been looking for me here! Hahaha. It seems that Facebook has taken the place of a lot of blogs out there, mine included. Not on purpose, I just can’t seem to find time for it all!
I haven’t stitched in quite awhile as I have taken up quilting. I never thought I would be doing this but I’m loving it! I learned to sew a straight line on a sewing machine in late April and I’ve been non-stop ever since. I’m almost finished with quilt #8! It’s been fun and quite hard on the old bank account but I have thoroughly enjoyed myself. I’ve made new friends and some have become even closer. I joined a quilt guild and am learning new things with each new project. I’ve even made a couple of bags and have many ideas for future projects.
The shoulder never got better on it’s own so I had surgery on March 9th. Only four months later and it feels great! Luckily I healed well and worked hard in therapy. It seems that the other shoulder will have to be done as well but I’m going to put that off for a good while.
I finally got promoted to Lieutenant after “holding the billet” for almost a year and a half. All of my guys minus one came out on their day off in uniform in the rain to share the moment with me. It made the day just super! Last night we went to Hooters in Denham Springs and had a little celebration. I just love my guys and they make going to work fun even after 25 years.
I have so many things I want to do as I get older and I’m looking forward to retirement in about six and a half years. There’s just not enough time to do all that I want to do and work, too. But I’m working hard at getting debt free and bumping my retirement as high as I can so I will be able to enjoy my later years. Of course as I get older life presents more and more challenges. I don’t think it’s just me, but I swear I get so frustrated with problems getting older brings. I can’t see as well, I can’t hear, and I’m always forgetting stuff. Although better than the alternative, getting older is not much fun! The fun part is that you get to act weird and wear what you want because you’re old and people just expect you to be silly. That part I do like!
Well, I guess that’s it for now. If I can remember, I’ll try to get back to regular posting. I don’t have all-timers yet but this some-timers is kicking my butt!
After a horrible week 2, I’m back on track. They always talk about the dreaded week two on Biggest Loser, and I have always scoffed. However, I had such a terrible week that I think I may be a believer now! I just couldn’t get enough to eat, didn’t want to work out, and was quite pissy about all of it!
I’m starting a plan that I’m calling the “Beach Body Boogie”. Each day I will try to do a workout from one of the Beach Body programs I have. Maybe a workout from P90X, Insanity, Turbo Fire, Chalene Xtreme, Power 90, 10-minute Trainer, Tony Horton One on One, etc. I have so many programs that I could go MONTHS without ever doing the same workout!
On the shoulder front, it’s not going so well. It felt better a few days last week but it’s now hurting all the time like before. I go back for my next therapy visit in the morning and I will see what Beau has to say about it. It’s looking like there will be an MRI in my future. Why oh why didn’t I do this last December before I had a flippin’ $500 deductible!?!?!?!?
On the stitching front, I have been working on an old round robin we did at the LNS in 2005. Yes, you read it right, 2005! I didn’t realize how close it was to being finished so it’s project #1 until it’s done. I want Jan Humphreys to stitch on it before she moves to Georgia so I will work on it until I get it to her and then finish it when it gets back. In the meantime, I’m still working on Anniversaries of the Heart, Quaker Gone Tropic, and I just saw the new series from Mirabilia, the Snow Globe series. The first one is out, the Blue Snowy Church, and it’s beautiful! I’ll be getting the pattern and waiting to see if it might work out to do the series on one piece as if on a street. If they are as pretty as the first one I’m in big trouble!
I finished my first crochet baby blanket for a friend’s baby shower and it came out rather cute! I’ll post pics of it after I have given it to her. I have also done a scarf for Daphne, and a dishcloth. Several of us got “bitten” in November by the crochet bug and just started crocheting like crazy! I am still doing it a little, but back to stitching for me!
